Boston Bars and Restaurants Approved to Stay Open Until 3 A.M. This Summer

Boston’s summer nightlife is getting a temporary extension, and for some bars and restaurants, that means last call can now stretch until 3 a.m.

The change comes as Boston prepares for one of its busiest summers in years, with FIFA World Cup events, Fourth of July celebrations, Boston 250 programming, and Sail Boston expected to bring large crowds into the city. Under a temporary state law, local licensing boards can allow approved establishments to serve alcohol for one extra hour, as long as service does not go beyond 3 a.m.

Boston moved quickly to opt in. Mayor Michelle Wu announced that eligible bars and restaurants could apply through the Boston Licensing Board to extend their alcohol and/or entertainment hours by one hour through the end of July.

This does not mean every Boston bar can stay open until 3 a.m. Businesses must be approved first, and the extension is based on their existing license. A business already licensed until 2 a.m. can apply to stay open until 3 a.m. Businesses with earlier closing times can only apply for one additional hour.

According to Boston.com’s public list and map, the Boston Licensing Board had approved extended hours for 191 establishments through July 31. Some are approved until midnight, 1 a.m., 2 a.m., or 3 a.m., depending on their license. The list below focuses only on the places approved until 3 a.m.

Why this matters

For Boston, this is more than a nightlife story. The city is trying to give restaurants, bars, hotels, and entertainment venues a chance to benefit from the major events bringing visitors into the region this summer, including the FIFA Fan Festival Boston and Sail Boston.

For readers in Chelsea, Revere, Everett, Winthrop, and nearby communities, the East Boston approvals may be especially useful. Several Eastie restaurants and bars close to Chelsea are included in the 3 a.m. list, giving North-of-Boston residents late-night options without needing to travel all the way into Downtown, Fenway, or the Seaport.

City officials have also made clear that approved businesses are still expected to operate responsibly. Establishments that have not received approval must continue following the hours listed on their regular annual license.

Check before you go

The approvals are temporary and may continue to change. Before making late-night plans, readers should check directly with the business or review the City of Boston’s official Summer 2026 Licensee Extension Approvals list.

For now, the 3 a.m. pilot gives Boston a chance to test a later-night summer scene at a time when the city is already expecting heavy foot traffic from tourists, soccer fans, workers, and local residents looking to enjoy the season.
