Dillon's Russian Steam Bath: A Chelsea Tradition More Than 140 Years in the Making |
Since 1885, this historic Chestnut Street bathhouse has preserved an old-world tradition while carrying forward a remarkable family legacy. |

Some Chelsea businesses have been around for decades. Dillon's Russian Steam Bath has been part of the city for more than 140 years.
Established in 1885, the bathhouse at 77 Chestnut Street preserves the traditional shvitz, a steam-bathing practice with roots in Russia and Eastern Europe.
Inside, visitors can experience a high-heat chamber warmed by granite rocks, a traditional wet steam room, and a lounge for relaxing between sessions.
One of Dillon's distinctive offerings is the platza, a traditional treatment using a bundle of oak leaves. Visitors can learn more about the experience on the bathhouse's services page.
But what makes Dillon's especially interesting is the family story behind it.
Owner Lisa Rizzo took over the business after her husband's death in 1999. As she explains on the Dillon's website, running a traditionally male-centered establishment came with challenges.
She persevered, continuing the family's commitment to preserving its history and traditions.
One lasting feature is the Monday women's session, a tradition that has continued for more than two decades.
