Two playgrounds, a fenced dog area, picnic shade and a splash pad are part of the makeover at Polonia Park, 37 Tremont Street. The changes give children, dog owners and neighbors more ways to enjoy this Chelsea park.

The city scheduled the public reopening for October 19 and a neighborhood celebration for Tuesday, October 27, at 6 p.m. The city has not published separate operating hours for every feature, including the splash pad.

A local report on the city's announcement also says free ice cream is planned for the celebration while supplies last.

Two play areas, plus room for dogs

The play equipment is divided by age: one structure for ages 2 to 5, another for ages 5 to 12. Families with children of different ages will have play areas designed for them at the same park.

Dog owners have a new fenced area. For people who would rather sit and catch up with a neighbor, the work includes shaded picnic space, extra benches and new plantings.

The splash pad will add an option during warm weather, but its seasonal operating dates have not been confirmed. Families should not assume the water feature is running in late October simply because the park is reopening.

Not every visit needs to be a long outing. A nearby shaded bench, a place for a dog to exercise, or a short stop at the playground can make a park useful on an ordinary weekday.

How the park was rebuilt

Renovations began in March. At that time, the Chelsea Record reported that the project followed community engagement and was part of Chelsea's ongoing neighborhood-park improvement program.

Funding described in that earlier announcement included a $500,000 state PARC grant and $200,000 from the Community Preservation Committee. PARC stands for Parkland Acquisitions and Renovations for Communities, a state program that helps municipalities improve public open space.

Environmental testing and possible cleanup were also part of the process. That work matters because renewing older urban sites can require more preparation than installing benches or playground equipment.

The renovation is led through the city's Department of Housing and Community Development, which coordinates park projects intended to expand safe and useful recreation areas.

Grand opening details

The community celebration is scheduled for Tuesday, October 27, at 6 p.m., at 37 Tremont Street, between Medford and Beacon streets. The weekly neighborhood calendar also points readers to the October 27 celebration.

Residents planning to use the splash pad should check its seasonal schedule before visiting. Operating hours for the water feature have not been announced.

The bigger achievement is the range of people the park aims to serve. Young children have equipment designed for them, older children have somewhere to play, and neighbors have more space to gather.

The park's latest improvements are designed to serve several generations of neighbors. Whether someone comes with a toddler, an older child or a dog, Polonia Park is gaining spaces for everyday outdoor life.
