Discussing a bank account, loan or financial document can be challenging enough without a language barrier.

Chelsea-based Metro Credit Union is working to make those conversations easier by equipping all 18 of its branches with multilingual communication technology.

The initiative comes through a partnership with Traduality, a company that develops language-access tools for credit unions.

Metro announced the partnership in 2026, saying the technology would help employees communicate more effectively with members who prefer languages other than English.

For a credit union headquartered in Chelsea, the investment has particular relevance. The city is home to residents from many countries and language backgrounds, and clear communication can be especially important when financial decisions are involved.

How the technology works

The partnership centers on a platform called Fire Lingo.

One component, Fire Lingo Face-to-Face, uses tablets to support real-time conversations between branch employees and members.

Metro says all 18 branches have been equipped with these tablets.

A second component, Fire Lingo Cloud, provides tools that back-office employees can use to prepare documents, educational materials and other communications in different languages.

According to Metro Credit Union's announcement, the tools are designed to improve understanding during member interactions and support more accessible communication.

The credit union has not provided a complete public list of supported languages in that announcement. Members seeking assistance in a specific language should contact their branch to confirm what is available.

Why language access matters

Financial services often involve specialized terms and decisions that can affect a household for years.

Someone applying for a loan may need to understand an interest rate, repayment schedule and fees. A person opening an account may have questions about deposits, withdrawals or account requirements.

Even when information is available in writing, members may want to ask follow-up questions before making a decision.

The new communication tools are intended to make those conversations more accessible.

Metro Chief Operating Officer Traci Michel described the partnership as part of the credit union's commitment to consistent service regardless of the language a member speaks.

The technology does not replace employees or eliminate the need to review financial documents carefully. It gives staff another way to communicate with people who might otherwise struggle to ask questions comfortably.

A local institution with a long history

Metro Credit Union was founded in 1926 and is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2026.

Headquartered in Chelsea, the credit union operates branches throughout Greater Boston and other Massachusetts communities.

In its announcement, Metro reported approximately $3.2 billion in assets and more than 200,000 members.

The organization is also designated Juntos Avanzamos, a recognition associated with credit unions committed to serving Hispanic and immigrant consumers.

The multilingual initiative builds on that service focus.

Chelsea residents can find local branch information for Metro's main office and Broadway location.

The branch pages identify languages spoken by employees, which may help members decide where to seek assistance.

What members should do

Metro says the technology is available throughout its branch network.

Members interested in language assistance can ask a branch employee or contact the credit union before visiting.

Addresses, hours and contact details are available through Metro's branch directory.

The initiative is a practical example of how a financial institution can adapt its services to the communities it serves.

For Chelsea residents, the benefit is simple: having more opportunities to ask financial questions and understand the answers in a language they feel comfortable using.
