Chelsea Public Schools has landed on the national stage, with its innovative literacy program now featured on public television stations across the country. The district's partnership with Ignite Reading is the subject of a new segment on "All Access with Andy Garcia," a documentary series hosted by the acclaimed actor and filmmaker.

The segment, which debuted August 24, is airing as interstitial programming on more than 170 participating public television stations nationwide and will continue running through 2027. For a district that has long focused on educational equity, the national recognition marks a significant milestone.

The results speak for themselves. During the last school year, 86% of participating Chelsea students fully mastered foundational phonics skills through the Ignite Reading program, according to the Chelsea Record. Most of those students were first-graders who received individualized 15-minute online tutoring sessions during the school day.

How the Program Works

Ignite Reading is a one-to-one virtual tutoring program built on the Science of Reading. The program pairs students with highly trained tutors for daily 15-minute sessions focused on foundational literacy skills, including phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, and fluency. Each tutor completes more than 100 hours of professional learning before working with students.

The program has earned a "Promising" rating from Evidence for ESSA, with research showing that tutored students outperform matched controls on reading assessments. The program has proven particularly effective for English learners and Black students, two groups that have historically faced achievement gaps in literacy.

The television segment features interviews with Chelsea students, parents, and educators who have experienced the program firsthand. The filming took place at the Mary C. Burke Elementary Complex, capturing authentic moments of learning and growth.
