At 462 Eastern Avenue in Chelsea, S&L Subs has been feeding the neighborhood since 1973. Its long history comes with a straightforward identity: substantial sandwiches, familiar comfort food, and personal service. For residents looking for lunch, takeout dinner, or food for a gathering, the shop offers plenty beyond its name.

In a 2018 BostonVoyager interview, Stephen Powers described a business built around quality ingredients and customer relationships. He pointed to Italian cold cuts and steak-and-cheese sandwiches as specialties, explaining that generations of customers had come through the shop. That history gives S&L a story stretching well beyond a single lunch order.

Today’s menu includes Italian subs, steak bombs, chicken Parmesan, eggplant Parmesan, and chicken kabob subs with vegetables, Greek dressing, and feta. Deli options include corned beef, pastrami, and Reubens. There are also salads, pasta dinners, breakfast sandwiches, and sides, giving groups with different appetites several ways to order from the same kitchen.

Convenience is part of the offering. S&L says its own staff deliver to Chelsea, Revere, East Boston, and parts of Everett; third-party delivery platforms provide additional ordering options. The business also offers catering for families, teams, and offices, and its website notes that Spanish-speaking staff are available.

The shop lists hours of Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–7 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m.–3 p.m., with Sundays closed. For orders or catering questions, call 617-884-9381 or visit its contact page. More than 50 years after opening, S&L remains an option for keeping an everyday meal close to home.
