A tense moment at a Lower Broadway dog park ended safely after a small dog fell through an opening near a manhole and struggled above the water below. Chelsea firefighters assessed the confined space, prepared a technical rope system, and used a ladder to reach the animal.

Chelsea is launching its first Civic Leadership Academy, a free 11-week fall program that gives residents a behind-the-scenes look at how local government works. Participants will explore topics such as budgeting, property assessments, road paving, human resources, boards, and committees.

Thousands of nurses returned to Brigham and Women’s Hospital Monday after a one-day strike and four-day lockout, ending several tense days in Boston’s Longwood Medical Area.
